Gary was my friend for the past 50 years, kind, generous, and above all, loyal. He was my husband's closest friend for 48 years, my daughter's "Uncle Gary," and my crazy little "brother." He was a devoted and loyal friend to everyone he loved. He was brilliant, creative, and one-of-a-kind, truly a unique human. He was interested and passionate about politics and justice and fought for democracy and freedom his whole life, and for many years on Facebook. He loved movies, LOVED movies and could talk about them for hours. He collected movies and books and equipment and art and kept everything. He treasured his wife Joy, the love of his life, his precious daughter, Lara Hatch, and his brother Jim Hatch.
We have many memories of Gary. Some of our favorites were going to Universal Studios and Disneyland with him. He loved those places so very much! We also remember him coming to our house when our daughter was a baby and he would sit on the floor and read books to her for as many times as she wanted to. We remember how he loved his pets, especially his dog Mahute. That was his special friend for many years. I remember how his Grandmother Nellie was his favorite person growing up. She was the only one he would listen to. She used to pay him and his brother to get their hair cut. I always thought that was hilarious!
Gary was always late and loved to spend money sometimes foolishly, which was sometimes extemely frustrating, but he was so smart and good at whatever he chose to do. He never turned his back on a friend, was generous to a fault, and despite everything, he was easy to love and care about. We will miss his phone calls and visits and his presence in the world.
