Ed Gor
Having known John as a colleague and volunteer at the same fraternal organization, he never lacked for enthusiasm in demonstrating his loyalty, patriotism, and love for our country. Though we lived in different parts of the country, John didn't shy away from opportunities to serve his community and provide leadership when called upon. My respect for John also goes far beyond what he accomplished, but how he conducted himself when faced with challenges. He never backed away and never gave in.
When people say, "it's better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all", I think of people like John who believed that whatever he hoped to achieve, he did so with the heart of a person who sought to improve the plight of those around him, especially those in his community. He was not afraid of a challenge when most others would back off for fear of failure.
I was fortunate to have had a conversation with John several weeks ago when we thought he was on the cusp of being released from the hospital. As surprising as his passing was to us, I and others who knew him knew him to be a fighter in life where nothing comes easy, especially as an underdog.
Sharon informed me earlier this year that John had accepted Christ into his heart and came to believe how much God loved him to save him. I hope that will be the joy and peace that comes to Sharon and the family at this time.
With sympathy and respect,
